Serious Mishap in Mallorca (Part One)
Physio Sophie writes about her latest injury experience whilst away in Mallorca, with Lee Valley Junior CC. part one
In early February I joined Lee Valley Junior CC team for a training camp in Alcudia, Mallorca. My role was to be the teams physio, but it was also a chance to have some social time with the team coach and team director, and to get out personally and do some training. What could go wrong?
I flew out to stay in the Viva Tropical Hotel for a four day trip, and after an evening briefing with the team set up for a 10 miles Time Trial the following day along with a climb up the infamous Sa Colabre. Definitely throwing me in at the deep end!
I organised a hire bike the next morning after a buffet style breakfast, and we all headed out together.
It's a 5 miles warm up and then we set off for the TT. I come in after 56 minutes (which I personally felt was not too ashamedly slow) and then the lads come flying past me to come in around 40 minutes. My Strava is here.
The rest of the team cycle on to the infamous Sa Colabre , but I retreat back to the hotel with for the chance to get some swim and core training in the afternoon.
The next day is the final cycling day for the team, and everyone (except me!) Is feeling fatigued. They've had a tough week and the mileage in the leg shows as we head out for an 'easy' ride to Cap de Formentor, a lighthouse.
I stay with the lads until we reach the first climb and they easily drop me. We meet at the top for what feels like a 5 second breather and they then drop me again on the descent...on the descent! These boys have no fear!
I catch them up at the lighthouse and decide to ride back with another group who are also with the team but taking a more leisurely pace back with some younger riders. After a slice of cake we set off to meet the whole Lee Valley group for lunch in Alcudia town.
